Misuse, abuse or simple negligence of your machine is a surefire way of making your computer's life shorter. Fortunately, there are hardware diagnostic tools you can use to help maintain your computer's health.
SourceUSB
- SourceUSB is a USB analyzer for Windows. The program records USB I/O requests and events in a binary log file and shows them in real time. Events and requests are logged from the time of system boot. You can choose to log by using keyboard shortcuts and menu commands. There are filters which can be used to control the number and types of information captured or shown. Time stamps are used on everything to better organize the data.
PassMark Performance Test
- PassMark Performance Test is a hardware benchmark utility that assesses computer performance. The program is fast and simple to use. It gives you the ability to objectively benchmark your PC using various speed tests and then compare the results to other computers. You can further measure the effect of upgrades and configuration changes. The standard suite offers CPU tests in mathematical operations, compression and encryption, as well as 2D graphics tests such as drawing lines, bitmaps, fonts, text and GUI elements. On top of that, 3D graphics tests such as simple to complex DirectX 3D graphics and animations are available. Other important things included are disk tests such as reading, writing and seeking within disk files; memory tests in the areas of allocating, accessing memory speed and efficiency; and CD/DVD operation tests.
SpeedFan
- SpeedFan is a monitoring program that shows information on things such as fan speeds, voltages and temperatures. It can also display hard disk temperatures and S.M.A.R.T. information. SpeedFan supports SCSI disks as well, and can even alter the front-side bus (FSB) speed on certain hardware. It can also access digital temperature sensors and alter fan speeds if you choose accordingly, which can lower noise levels. SpeedFan is compatible with Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista and Windows 7, as well as 64-bit versions of those operating systems.
